The section factor of a rectangular channel is 111.80m. The discharge and velocity of water are 250  m^3⁄s and 5 m⁄s respectively. Calculate the hydraulic depth of the channel.

(a) 2m

(b) 3m

(c) 4m

(d) 5m

The question was posed to me during an interview for a job.

Query is from Geometrical Properties of Rectangular Section in chapter Flow in Open Channels of Fluid Mechanics

Correct option is (d) 5m

For explanation I would say: Section factor (Z) = A√D

Discharge (Q) = AV

A = 250/5 = 50m^2

111.80 = 50√D

D = 5m.
