The section factor and hydraulic depth for a rectangular channel are 40m and 4m respectively. Determine the top width of the channel.

This question was posed to me in semester exam.

This is a very interesting question from Geometrical Properties of Rectangular Section topic in division Flow in Open Channels of Fluid Mechanics

Right option is (c) 5m

To explain I would say: Section factor (Z) = A√D

40 = A√4 ; A = 20m^2

A = (Depth) (Width)

Width = 5m.
