The correct answer is (b) inhibiting protein synthesis

For explanation I would say: Hygromycin is used as a protein synthesis inhibitor. It is conferred by a bacterial hph gene which encodes hygromycin phosphotransferase. Resistance to hygromycin is used as a selectable marker.
