Determine the angle θ so that the force in the bolt 1 has maximum value.

(a) 180’

(b) 90’

(c) 0’

(d) 45’

I was tested on this by my senior.

This fundamental question comes from the Eccentric Load on Circular Base in unit Threaded Joints of Machine Design

Accurate option is (a) 180’

In simpler terms: F₁=2Plx(a-b Cos θ)/4(2a²+b²), hence for force to be max Cosθ=-1 or θ=180’.
