In the following equation [ L = 2/3(J + 2)] to determine whether or not the given chain in kinematic, higher pair is treated equivalent to

(a) two lower pairs and an additional links

(b) two higher pairs and two additional links

(c) one lower pairs and two additional links

(d) none of the mentioned

This question was addressed to me by my college director while I was bunking the class.

This is a very interesting question from Grubler’s Criterion for Plane Mechanisms topic in division Simple Mechanisms of Machine Kinematics

The correct choice is (a) two lower pairs and an additional links

Explanation: In the above equation, each higher pair is taken equivalent to two lower pairs and an additional link.

If one of the links of the constrained chain is fixed, it results into mechanism.
