The relation between number of pairs(p) forming a kinematic chain and the number of links(l) is

(a) l = 2p – 2

(b) l = 2p – 3

(c) l = 2p – 4

(d) l = 2p – 5

The question was posed to me by my college professor while I was bunking the class.

The question is from Kinematic Pair topic in section Simple Mechanisms of Machine Kinematics

The correct choice is (c) l = 2p – 4

For explanation I would say: If each link is assumed to form two pairs with adjacent links, then the relation between the number of pairs(p) forming a kinematic chain and the number of links(l) may be expressed in the form of an equation : l = 2p – 4
