A typewriter mechanism has 7 number of binary joints, six links and none of higher pairs. The mechanism is

(a) kinematically sound

(b) not sound

(c) soundness would depend upon which link is kept fixed

(d) none of the mentioned

I had been asked this question at a job interview.

Origin of the question is Application of Kutzbach Criterion to Plane Mechanisms in section Simple Mechanisms of Machine Kinematics

Right option is (a) kinematically sound

For explanation I would say: J + 1/2 H = 3/2L – 2

or, 7 + 0 = 3/2 x 6 -2

or, 7 = 7

Hence, it is Kinematically sound.
