In consolidation test, the soil is __________

I have been asked this question in semester exam.

The origin of the question is Laboratory Consolidation Test in section One Dimensional Consolidation of Geotechnical Engineering I

Right answer is (a) restrained laterally

The explanation is: In consolidation test, since the load on the soil specimen is applied in the vertical direction, the deflection due to the load is also in the vertical direction. Hence, in the consolidation test, the soil is restrained laterally.
