This question was posed to me in an internship interview.

My question is from Chute Spillway topic in division Spillways, Energy Dissipators and Spillway Gates of Irrigation Engineering

The correct option is (b) a trough spillway

The explanation is: A chute or trough spillway is sometimes called as a waste weir. It is called as chute spillway because after crossing over the crest of the spillway water flow shoots down a channel or trough to meet the river channel downstream of the dam. The trough is taken straight from the crest to the river.
