When a body is subjected to transverse vibrations, the stress induced in a body will be

(a) shear stress

(b) bending stress

(c) tensile stress

(d) compressive stress

I had been asked this question in class test.

This question is from Types of Vibratory Motion and Natural Frequency of Free Longitudinal Vibrations topic in chapter Longitudinal and Transverse Vibrations of Machine Dynamics

Right choice is (b) bending stress

For explanation I would say: The critical speed of a shaft with a disc supported in between is equal to the natural frequency of the system in transverse vibrations and the stress induced is bending stress.
