The critical speed of a shaft with a disc supported in between is equal to the natural frequency of the system in

(a) transverse vibrations

(b) torsional vibrations

(c) longitudinal vibrations

(d) none of the mentioned

The question was posed to me in an online interview.

Question is taken from Types of Vibratory Motion and Natural Frequency of Free Longitudinal Vibrations in chapter Longitudinal and Transverse Vibrations of Machine Dynamics

The correct choice is (a) transverse vibrations

To explain I would say: The critical speed of a shaft with a disc supported in between is equal to the natural frequency of the system in transverse vibrations and the stress induced is bending stress.
