I have been asked this question at a job interview.

My enquiry is from Design of Rigid Pavements topic in portion Design of Flexible & Rigid Pavement of Geotechnical Engineering II

The correct answer is (c) compressive stress

To explain I would say: During expansion the under-side of the slab is subjected to compression. This can be visualised by the hogging action of the beam where the under-side is in compression.
