What happens to the depth of flow when there is an obstruction in the path?

(a) Remains the same

(b) Increases

(c) Decreases

(d) Flow stops

This question was posed to me by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

My doubt stems from Gradually Varied Flow(GVF) in chapter Non Uniform Flow in Channels of Fluid Mechanics

Correct option is (b) Increases

Easy explanation: When the flow is obstructed the depth of flow increases as the water flows over the object. This change in path is called back water curve.
