What is a banded matrix?

I had been asked this question by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

My question is from Assembly of Global Stiffness Matrix for the Banded & Skyline Solutions topic in section Trusses of Finite Element Method

Right option is (a) Sparse matrix

The best I can explain: In matrix theory band matrix is a sparse matrix, whose non-zero entities are confined to a diagonal band. Comprising the main diagonal and zero are more diagonals on either side.
