On moderate foundations and particularly in seismic areas, the type of dam which can preferably be considered for construction is ___________________

(a) masonry gravity dam

(b) earthen dam

(c) rock-fill dam

(d) arch dam

I have been asked this question by my college professor while I was bunking the class.

The origin of the question is Rock Fill Dams in section Earthen and Rock Fill Dams of Irrigation Engineering

Right choice is (c) rock-fill dam

To explain I would say: Rock-fill dams provide high resistance to seismic forces due to their flexible character. They are liable to large settlements which may lead to cracking of concrete membrane.
