What does compost do to the alkaline soil?

(a) Wash away salts and chemicals

(b) Increase the pH

(c) Leads to the death of microorganisms

I got this question by my college director while I was bunking the class.

I'm obligated to ask this question of Management of Alkali Soil in portion Management and Remediation of Problem Soil of Environmental Biotechnology

The correct answer is (a) Wash away salts and chemicals

To elaborate: Compost when added to the alkaline soil, it washes away the salts and chemicals in the soil leading to the drop in soil pH, increasing pH of soil will make the soil alkaline, and it does not kill the microorganisms and hence, no soil contamination.
