The greatest and the least depth of a circular plate of 4 m diameter from the free surface of water are 3m and 1 m respectively as shown. What will be the total pressure in (kN) on the plate?

(a) 123

(b) 185

(c) 246

(d) 308

This question was addressed to me by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

My question is taken from Hydrostatic Force on Plane Area topic in section Hydrostatic Forces on Surfaces of Fluid Mechanics

Right answer is (c) 246

Easiest explanation: Total liquid pressure on the lamina = F = γyA, where γ = specific weight of the liquid, y = depth of centroid of the lamina from the free surface, A= area of the centroid. Now, γ = 9.81 * 10^3 N / m^3; y = 1 + 3 – 1 / 2 – 2m, A = ^π ⁄ 4 * 4^2 = 4π m^2. Hence, F = 246.55 kN.
