The foundation that is used when the soil mass is sufficiently erratic?

(a) Strap footing

(b) Combined footing

(c) Mat footing

(d) Rectangular combined footing

Question is taken from Shallow Foundations in section Shallow Foundations of Geotechnical Engineering II

Right answer is (c) Mat footing

For explanation I would say: Mat footing is used where the soil contains compressible lenses or the soil is sufficiently erratic so that the differential settlement would be difficult to control.
