Easiest explanation: Carbon-dioxide gas is used at a low pressure usually about 1.5 kg/cm^2 is diffused through a mixture (of sand and sodium silicate) to initiate the hardening reaction which takes from a few seconds to a few minutes depending upon the size of the core or mold.
