The lateral earth pressure at rest with respect to Poisson’s ratio is _______

(a) σh=μ(σh-σv)

(b) σh=μ(σh-σv)

(c) σh=μ(σh+σv)

(d) σh=-μ(σh-σv)

I have been asked this question in semester exam.

Question is taken from Earth Pressure at Rest in portion Failure Envelopes & Earth Pressure of Geotechnical Engineering II

Right choice is (c) σh=μ(σh+σv)

To explain: The earth pressure at rest has the condition corresponding to ∈h=0.

Since, \(∈_h=\frac{1}{E} [σ_h-μ(σ_h-σ_v)],\)

∴ σh=μ(σh+σv).
