I had been asked this question in a national level competition.

My question is taken from Sections in the Foundry topic in division Pattern Materials & Moulding Sand Tests of Foundry and Forging

Correct answer is (d) Cores

To explain: The cores are made up of sand and are placed in the mould box to create cavities in the castings. Once the metal is poured and solidified, the cores are obtained in an amorphous form and cannot be withdrawn.
