I had been asked this question during an interview.

My question is based upon Population Equivalent and Relative Stability in portion Wastewater Characteristics of Environmental Engineering

For explanation I would say: In COD test, oxidization of organic matter takes place by potassium dichromate in the presence of sulphuric acid using ferroin as indicator.
