In a Hartnell governor, the stiffness of the spring is given by

(a) S1 + S2/h

(b) S2 – S1/h

(c) S1 + S2/2h

I have been asked this question in my homework.

My doubt stems from Watt Governor topic in portion Governors of Machine Dynamics

Right answer is (b) S2 – S1/h

To explain: h = (r1 – r2y/x

and stiffness of the spring, s = S2 – S1/h
